Diflucan is a well known anti-fungal antibiotic that can be used to treat candidiasis and
other fungal infections of the vagina, throat, urinary tract and others. It functions by
killing the sensitive fungi in the fungal cell membrane.
When to Consume?
It can be consumed orally either with food or before meals. Consume it with a glass of
water. Results are evident within a day, and regular consumption will help to get rid of
the infection completely. But in case the symptoms persist even after regular
consumption, then you need to notify your doctor about the same.
The dosage of the medicine differs depending on the type of infection.
Some of the common infections and their dosages for adults are mentioned below.
1) Genital thrush – a single dose of 150mg consumed at the same time every day.
2) Mucosal thrush – although it depends on where the infection is, the common dosage is 50 mg once a day for around 30 days.
3) Fungal skin infections – 50mg once a day for about a fortnight to a month
4) Internal fungal infections- 400mg on the day you begin your dose, followed by 200 to 400mg once a day for around six to eight weeks. In case the symptoms have not completely disappeared then you may need to continue the medication for a little longer. However, you need to seek the advice of your doctor.
5) As prevention against fungal infections – 50 to 400mg once a day for the duration
where you are prone to the risk of being infected.
6) To avoid the infection due to Cryptococcus from relapse– 100 to 200mg once a day
for as long as you wish to continue.
Dosage for Children between 4 weeks to 15 years according to the type of infection:
1) mucosal infections – 3mg/kg once a day;
2)internal fungal infections – 6-12mg/kg once a day;
3)prevention of fungal infections – 3-12mg/kg once a day, for as long as the risk of being
The same dose can be given to children less than 4 weeks old, but the medicine is to be administered on alternate days, instead of daily for children above 2 weeks, and less than 4 weeks old. For children less than 2 weeks old, the frequency is once every three days.
Note: These dosages are based on generic calculations and you need to seek medical advice before starting the medication.
For patients suffering from vaginal yeast infections single dose of Diflucan is prescribed. However, in case there is no improvement within 5 days, then you need to seek medical assistance once more. Patients suffering from liver and kidney diseases need to inform their doctor before starting a dose of Diflucan.
At times, Diflucan is known to cause dizziness. Hence we prohibit you from driving or using machinery after consuming it. Reduce your intake of alcohol, and avoid completely if possible. At times it may trigger skin hives, breathing disorders, swelling of the face, nausea, upset
stomach, dark urination, yellowing of the skin, flu-like symptoms, bleeding, abnormal fatigue, or seizures, headaches, and loss of taste.
In case you face any of these symptoms immediately discontinue the medication and inform your doctor. If the symptoms persist even after discontinuing, then you need to seek immediate medical assistance.
Patients suffering from hypersensitivity to Fluconazole and similar anti-fungal azole medicines should not consume Diflucan. Patients suffering from kidney, liver, and heart disorders to need to take medicine only after proper medical advice. People facing low blood pressure, and lack of calcium, magnesium or potassium also need to update their doctor regarding their medical history before consuming Diflucan. It is not suitable for pregnant and lactating women.
Diflucan interacts with blood thinning medications, sedatives, seizure medicines, theophylline, and other similar medicines. As consuming two drugs together may affect their efficiency, it is better to consult your doctor regarding the dosage and the timing, to get the best results.
In case you skip a dose, then you can take it immediately after you remember. However, in case it’s close to the time of your next dose, then you need to skip it and continue with your regular routine. Never consume a double dose.
An overdose of Diflucan may trigger abnormal behavior and may be fatal. In case you have accidentally taken an overdose, immediately update your doctor and seek professional help.
Diflucan should be stored at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F far from the
reach of children and pets. Keep it in a place which is dry and far from light.
