Common Uses

Carafate is a gastrointestinal medicine, whose active component is Sucralfate. This medicine forms a covering layer on the ulcer, thus protecting it from the acids, bile salts, and enzymes secreted in the stomach. This medicine starts showing effects within a fortnight, but the course should be continued for a month or two, depending on the doctor’s advice.

Dosage and Directions

  • Carafate should be consumed orally on an empty stomach an hour or two before meals.
  • No antacid should be consumed half an hour before or after consuming Carafate.
  • The ulcer usually takes around a month or two to completely cure, but the results are reflected earlier.
  • Never discontinue the medicine mid-course, as it may cause a relapse.
  • Never mix this medicine with other medicines, as it may interact, causing acute side effects.
  • Never consume a double dose of Carafate.

Missed or Overdose

In case you miss a dose and realize it close to the time of your next dose, then you can resume your regular schedule. Never consume a double dose, or consume two doses within a short time gap, else it may trigger side effects. In case you notice any abnormal symptoms, then you should seek immediate medical assistance.

Carafate should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F. It should not be kept exposed to direct sunlight or heat. Never keep it in moist places such as bathrooms. Ensure that it is far from the reach of kids or pets.
